We specialize in everything children

At Cohen Children’s Medical Center, we’re dedicated to providing the very best care to meet the special needs of children, from premature babies to adolescents. Our 202-bed hospital opened in 1983 as the New York metropolitan area’s only hospital designed exclusively for children. Today we are the largest provider of pediatric health services in New York state, serving 1.8 million children in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

At our center, children see us differently—because we approach them differently. We understand their needs, their emotions, their fears, and their wish to lead normal lives—to just be kids. That’s why we’ve created a warm and bright environment to make every child’s stay with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Every aspect of our spacious, open building was designed with kids and families in mind—from the fold-out beds for parents to the fully staffed playrooms on each floor.

Leaders in pediatric care

Our innovative thinking and advanced expertise make us a leader in a wide range of clinical areas—and we’re proud to have been ranked in eight specialties on the U.S. News & World Report 2018-19 Best Children’s Hospitals list.

The children we treat are motivating cutting-edge research in complex specialties like genomics and cardiac care. They inspire us to think big, to go beyond the status quo and relentlessly pursue breakthroughs that will impact the health and treatment of children across the hallway, across the country and across the globe for years to come.

And our multidisciplinary care teams—which include doctors, nurses, therapists and many others—know how to form relationships with our young patients that go beyond just exceptional medicine—they come from empathy, compassion and truly loving what we do.

Why? Because we’ve learned that we’re not just helping children get well. We’re protecting childhoods. And what is more important than that?

Our History

Elizabeth Seton Children’s has a long legacy of serving the children and families of New York – both in health care and education. Our history is rooted in the story of the Sisters of Charity Ministry Network, our sponsors, who began their work over 200 years ago in 1817, and in The New York Foundling, whose doors were opened in 1869 by three Sisters of Charity in an effort to save babies being abandoned on the streets of New York.

It was those children, with the greatest medical needs, who became the genesis for Elizabeth Seton Children’s as it commenced its evolution from a program of The Foundling to what it is today: a nationally recognized champion of medically complex children needing specialized medical, nursing, rehabilitative and educational services both living in residence and in the community.

For over 30 years we have been inspired to serve children and their families with loving care and transformational outcomes. Our journey continues today.

Catherine S. Manno, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics
