December 19, 2019 / Amy Schuster Moebius Syndrome Holiday Hero

My name is Amy Schuster. I was born on January 5th, 1993 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. I moved to Colorado when I was 2 and have lived here ever since. When I was born I had a strider which was caused by a partial palsy of one of my vocal cords. It reduced my ability to take in enough air and it caused an enlargement of the right ventricle of the heart. Because of this, I had a tracheotomy. I had my trache removed when I was 2. I was also born with my legs not fully developed (my right side is shorter than my left side). My prosthetics allow me to have full mobility. I used to hate talking about my differences and Moebius. I would always try and make up something or shy away from the subject. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to embrace it and even joke about it. I love talking about what makes me unique and I am always happy to answer questions and spread Moebius awareness! I proudly use the hashtag #Moebiusproblems with my peers to discuss problems related to communication, eating, etc. In 2018, I graduated with a bachelors in Sociology with a minor in Social Work. I currently have four part time jobs including doing customer care work behind a desk for a tea company, working at a grocery store, updating the social media page and secretary work for a local non-profit and occasionally helping out at a daycare center (it’s fun and also as a benefit I get a ski pass). So you can say I stay pretty busy! In my downtime, I love volunteering, going out to eat, skiing, watching movies/TV, traveling, going to concerts and playing the piano!
